The Reminder I Needed

There are some things I’m just a sucker for…

  • My oldest when he puts my arm around me and asks for something in that smartass-I-know-you’re-going-to-say-no-glance-but-I’m-going-to-try-to-charm-you-anyway look.
  • Little Bean when he tilts his head down and looks up with that grin only your 5-year-old can give you.
  • And my damn husband when he asks me to go out to lunch!

Ugh.. it’s like my kryptonite because I really DO want to go with him but I don’t but I do.

Yes, it’s complicated.

On one hand, I want to go because it’s fun and easy and nice to be out together. I feel lucky we even have the opportunity to snag an hour midday to see each other, and why shouldn’t I take advantage of it? Especially during this stage of our lives with the kids the ages they are and when we really don’t ever have time to ourselves to just talk.

On the other hand, I want to cook more at home. Save more money and be smart about my choices. It’s so much easier to save money and eat healthier at home and I actually enjoy cooking for myself and turning leftovers into lunches, which is exactly what I did yesterday.

The text came in around 11:30. I was wrapping up some work at the gym and my stomach was growling. I stayed strong. Here’s what how it went down.

It was perfect! We ate together. He had his Chipotle. I had my chili. And then we took a quick walk around the neighborhood before going back to work.

Today went down a little differently.

We were actually working together. The consulting work I recently picked up is from his company, so we spent the morning going over the engine they use to generate their e-learning modules. Around 11:30 he says,

“So, where are you taking me for lunch?”

We’ve been stuck in the house all morning, huddled around his computer. It was rainy and miserable. We just wanted a break.

At first I said no, but truth be told I wanted to go as much as he did, so I caved.

Well, I compromised with myself.

We went to our favorite sandwich shop down the road and instead of getting my usual sub I opted for the Italian veggie wrap with dressing on the side.

lunch wrap!

It was amazing! And just the reminder I needed to be flexible and make the best choices I can because why shouldn’t I enjoy lunch out on a busy day?

Self-talk is a pretty big deal. We all have internal monologues that consistently play in our head, guiding us through our day.
